香港和美國科學團隊用鐳射光來研究侏儸紀時期的「近鳥龍」（Anchiornis）骨骼軟組織化石，他們發現此物種的足部「鱗狀物」就像現在的公雞爪一樣；若由化石輪廓來看，鳥龍「鼓槌狀的腿、細長的尾巴、手臂」都像極了現在的鳥類。此研究目前已發表於「自然通訊」（Nature Communications）中，團隊希望可以由此正式開啟鳥類生命起源的研究。

研究報告執筆人之一、香港大學的皮特曼（Michael Pittman）說，近鳥龍（Anchiornis）是生長於1億6000萬年前，前肢與後肢都有羽毛，體型不大，有如現在的雞鴨，但目前仍無法確定牠們是否會飛。他表示，科學家過去對於恐龍的身形，多半都是將化石拿來與鳥centurion行李箱類或鱷魚做比較，不過這次團隊選擇用雷射紫光照射暗室中的化石，一段時間後，沒有照射的化石卻會自己發出光芒，藉此再用這些印記分析出肉質的部分，這也是令團隊覺得驚人的發現。

皮特曼說，他們發現近鳥龍的細長尾巴演化為雞尾椎、還有似翅膀的手臂都像極了現在的雞翅，就連鼓槌狀的腿部都與雞腿相似；另外，近鳥龍腳上的鱗狀物也與雞爪上的形狀相仿。依目前所知的研究中，近鳥龍生存的年代與地球上的第一隻鳥類時間相同，因此科學家們都相信只要繼續研究近鳥龍就能打開「鳥類或飛行禽類」的生命起源。
